Wollongong sweethearts, Sesame Girl, have been carving their place in Australia’s indie scene since the release of their acclaimed 2021 debut Get Up. In just a few short years, they’ve built a loyal following along the east coast, sharing stages with Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers, British India, MAY-A, and Vacations.

The band today enter a new era with their latest single ‘Back To Texas’ out now. Self-described as “a breakup song about time and distance making your heart fonder, while a lack of closure makes you act out in the moment. It’s literally about getting dumped by someone because they had to move back home to America, and dealing with the effects of that sudden change.”

We caught up with Heather to chat about her dream Ses Fest line up, favourite gigs and love for horse memes.

Can you give us a rundown of all the Sesame Girl side/related projects?

Hey yeah! Our guitarist Josh plays in Ok Hotel and makes music videos and our drummer Blake plays in Smartcasual and is a music producer! I guess my side project is my ceramics, it’s called pookie ceramics!

You’ve toured the country extensively, where and when have been your favourite shows?

I think our recent show in gong Ses Fest. It was literally so beautiful, the first band started playing and I was just standing there crying because it was so special.

What would you say makes a live show special?

My favourite thing to do to make a show special is to do stage decorations, but I definitely think not being too serious on stage helps too. I think it’s nice when the crowd can laugh and can see you’re partying with them.

What’s the best live show you’ve been to lately?

I was right up the front at laneway completely separated from my friends watching Clairo, and it was a dream come true. I’d die for that woman.

If you could build a dream lineup for Ses Fest, who else would be playing?

Probably my favourite band Armlock, I’d also love to have phoebe go, twine, blue diner, swapmeet and mr industry.

What’s your most played song right now? / What song do you currently have on repeat?

It’s probably the subway by Chappell

Favourite memes you’ve seen lately?

Horse meme, but I don’t think the people making them think they’re a meme at all.

3 things that influence Sesame Girl outside of music?

I’ve been influenced stylistically by the baseball kid from ‘Meet the Robertsons' recently… I like his dark circles and freckles combo. I also think we’ve been influenced by old affliction t-shirts recently and anything horse related.
