One of our favourite acts this past week was trip-hop, shoegaze artist effe. Backed by an all star band featuring Maia Efstathis and Tex Keane, effe played her first hometown shows since the release of her debut single back in March.
With the release of her latest single ‘Final Girl’ out now, we sat down with effe to talk about her visual inspirations, nostalgia and hidden talents outside of music. Read on to get to know effe.
For fans of Caroline Polachek, Hatchie and Lana Del Rey.

Can you share some visual inspirations for effe?
Early 2000s / 2010s music videos. A flower growing from a weed in a dingy alleyway.
Where would you take a friend visiting Naarm/Melbourne for the first time? Any hidden gem spots-food, parks, shops etc. that you think more people should know about?
Reading a book in Fitzroy gardens
Getting a kafta kebab A1 bakery, Brunswick
Having a beer at sunset at Siglo rooftop
What would you say makes a live show special?
Energy and presence! I love artists whose energy on stage completely captivates the audience. I experienced this happening when I saw Perfume Genius back in 2022, and every slow movement they made as they gradually wrapped themselves in fabric had the audience in a trance. I love when an artist is so present on stage, the audience has no choice but to tune in completely.
Favourite venue in Naarm/Melbourne?
Love the 360 stage at Nightcat
3 Favourite films?
- Scott Pilgrim vs the World
- Nowhere
- A Very Curious Girl

What do you consider to be the perfect song?
Crushing by Eartheater
What music did you grow up listening to?
My parents played a lot of Dido and Sade, and when I discovered Lana Del Rey at 12 she was the only artist I listened to.
3 things that make you feel nostalgic?
- listening to Dido’s album ‘Life For Rent’
- Drinking Malibu
- The smell of sunscreen (which also reminds me of Malibu lol)
Any hidden talents outside of music?
I love to do anything creative! I’ll go into an art supply store and pick up a new hobby for the week. I recently got into making little sculptures out of oven bake clay, i.e little teddy bears, picture frames, figurines, etc. In fact the cover art for my first single ‘Chokehold’ features a heart shaped locket I made out of porcelain!
Is there anything else you want the world to know about effe?
I seem very serious online but I’m actually very silly/ approachable! I don’t know how to show my personality on the internet lol
Listen to effe’s latest release ‘Final Girl’ out now.
