One of the most interesting parts of the blossoming local music scene of Brisbane is the shoegaze, dream pop, and indie rock prominence. There’s a slew of excellent bands and artists taking inspiration from shoegaze artists of the past and present, leading to a melting pot of different styles.
Producer and songwriter EJ Wood’s new single ‘Garden’ comes a little over 2 months after the release of his debut single ‘Four Months’. In the new track, Wood opts for a dreamier style filled with scintillating guitars rather than the heavier, reverberating sounds of his first single. This also leads to more prominent vocals, allowing for the lyrics to shine through.
The lyrics tell the tale of a once lush garden deteriorating due to neglect, akin to an ailing relationship that’s falling apart. Its breezy groove contrasts the somber story nicely, with elements similar to George Clanton or some of Lil Ugly Mane’s work in his ‘Volcanic Bird’ era.
With 2 great singles under his belt, EJ Wood seems poised to keep growing and evolving with new sounds and styles, something we can all look forward to.
